Fondant \u00e0 son rythme le plus rapide depuis le d\u00e9but du suivi, l&rsquo;Antarctique, cette ann\u00e9e seulement, a perdu une glace de mer d&rsquo;une taille \u00e9quivalente \u00e0 l&rsquo;Argentine, soit pr\u00e8s d&rsquo;un tiers de la superficie totale des \u00c9tats-Unis. \u00c0 cette \u00e9poque de l\u2019ann\u00e9e, une grande partie de la glace devrait d\u00e9j\u00e0 s\u2019\u00eatre reconstitu\u00e9e, mais il semble que cette perte soit permanente, et <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/jul\/29\/something-weird-is-going-on-search-for-answers-as-antarctic-sea-ice-stays-at-historic-lows\">les scientifiques la qualifient de \u00ab\u00a0choquante\u00a0\u00bb<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Contrairement aux glaciers, qui se forment au sommet des zones montagneuses \u00e9lev\u00e9es, la glace de mer se forme directement dans l\u2019eau. M\u00eame si cette perte ne contribue pas \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9vation du niveau de la mer \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle mondiale, elle n\u2019en demeure pas moins pr\u00e9occupante. Premi\u00e8rement, la glace de mer aide \u00e0 r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir la chaleur du soleil pour emp\u00eacher le r\u00e9chauffement de l\u2019oc\u00e9an, et deuxi\u00e8mement, elle prot\u00e8ge la glace glaciaire terrestre de l\u2019\u00e9rosion caus\u00e9e par les vagues et les temp\u00eates.<\/p>\n<p>La question de savoir si les changements rapides en Antarctique sont enti\u00e8rement caus\u00e9s par l&rsquo;activit\u00e9 humaine reste un sujet de d\u00e9bat, mais les scientifiques s&rsquo;accordent sur le fait que<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/ghgemissions\/sources-greenhouse-gas-emissions\"> les \u00e9missions de gaz \u00e0 effet de serre<\/a> emprisonnent la chaleur et r\u00e9chauffent la plan\u00e8te, jouant ainsi un r\u00f4le majeur dans l&rsquo;acc\u00e9l\u00e9ration du processus.<\/p>\n<p>Les glaciers du monde entier sont confront\u00e9s \u00e0 un d\u00e9clin tout aussi rapide et on peut le voir plus clairement l\u00e0 o\u00f9 la neige et la glace reculent visiblement. Surplombant Chamonix, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2018\/aug\/24\/climate-change-is-melting-the-french-alps-say-mountaineers\">le glacier du Montenvers fond<\/a> \u00e0 un rythme d&rsquo;environ 40 m\u00e8tres par an, comme s&rsquo;il reculait sous la chaleur induite par l&rsquo;homme. On estime que d\u2019ici trente ans, son <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/energy-environment\/news\/in-chamonix-tourism-adapts-to-melting-ice-and-snow\/\">domaine skiable dispara\u00eetra<\/a> compl\u00e8tement.<\/p>\n<p>Pendant ce temps, apr\u00e8s le mois de juillet le plus chaud jamais enregistr\u00e9, les <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/greenland-ice-sheet-melting-satellite-images-heat-wave-1816406\">images de la NASA ont r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 des pertes stup\u00e9fiantes<\/a> sur le glacier Frederiksh\u00e5b au Groenland. L&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 cruellement chaud a affect\u00e9 n\u00e9gativement de vastes r\u00e9gions de la plan\u00e8te partout, Phoenix, en Arizona, enregistrant 31 jours cons\u00e9cutifs de temp\u00e9ratures de 110 degr\u00e9s Fahrenheit (environ 38 degr\u00e9s Celsius) et plus.<\/p>\n<p>Certes, la couverture de glace de la Terre diminue depuis de nombreuses d\u00e9cennies, les fameuses neiges du Kilimandjaro \u00e9tant d\u00e9sormais inf\u00e9rieures de 80 % \u00e0 celles de 1912. Ce n\u2019est pourtant pas le changement en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, mais la r\u00e9cente acc\u00e9l\u00e9ration, tant sur terre que sur mer, qui est pr\u00e9occupante.
