Composte da una delicata rete di cianobatteri, licheni e muschi, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/katm\/blogs\/our-impact-on-growth-reducing-our-trace-on-cryptobiotic-soils.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">queste strutture sono tra gli esseri viventi pi\u00f9 antichi<\/a> trovai sulla Terra, ma la loro stessa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upr.org\/utah-news\/2022-05-11\/biological-soil-crusts-in-canyonlands-national-park-are-affected-by-a-warming-climate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">esistenza \u00e8 minacciata<\/a>. Grazie alla secrezione di una sostanza simile a una colla, chiamata esopolisaccaride, i cianobatteri si legano alla superficie del deserto, permettendole di diventare l&#8217;habitat di una vivace vita vegetale e animale. A causa delle estreme escursioni termiche tipiche del deserto, la frequente azione di congelamento e scongelamento fa s\u00ec che le biocroste formino piccole torri e piramidi che vengono poi colonizzate da comunit\u00e0 di muschi pelosi, licheni robusti e microfunghi.<\/p>\n\n<p>Questo strato vivente e che respira, composto da organismi strettamente interconnessi, possiede un&#8217;incredibile capacit\u00e0 di trattenere l&#8217;umidit\u00e0. Si mantiene dormiente quando \u00e8 asciutta, ma riprende vita nel momento in cui la pioggia raggiunge la sua superficie. Inoltre, impedisce ai violenti acquazzoni del deserto di erodere il terreno. Le biocroste rallentano il deflusso dell&#8217;acqua e favoriscono la penetrazione dell&#8217;umidit\u00e0 vitale nelle parti pi\u00f9 profonde del terreno, dove nutre le <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/glca\/learn\/nature\/vascularplants.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">piante vascolari <\/a> come erbe, fiori e cactus.<\/p>\n\n<p>Oltre a legarsi alla superficie del deserto, i suoli criptobiotici svolgono un ruolo fondamentale nel prevenire le <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unccd.int\/news-stories\/press-releases\/sand-and-dust-storm-frequency-increasing-many-world-regions-un-warns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emissioni di polvere e le tempeste <\/a> \u2013 un fenomeno che ha subito un drastico aumento negli ultimi anni. L&#8217;eccessiva emissione di polveri non solo deteriora la qualit\u00e0 dell&#8217;aria, ma accelera anche lo scioglimento dei ghiacciai e riduce i flussi fluviali, con un impatto sugli ecosistemi che va ben oltre gli aridi paesaggi desertici.<\/p>\n\n<p>Anche dopo aver iniziato a studiare e comprendere l&#8217;importanza dei suoli criptobiotici, gli scienziati sono convinti di una cosa: nonostante la loro estrema resilienza agli sbalzi di temperatura, alla siccit\u00e0 prolungata e persino ai raggi UV, le biocroste sono, in realt\u00e0, molto fragili e facilmente alterabili dalle attivit\u00e0 umane. Le escursioni fuori sentiero e il traffico di veicoli fanno crollare la struttura aerea del suolo criptobiotico, causando danni che richiedono anni per essere risanati. Inoltre, una volta compromesso, lo strato criptobiotico perde la sua capacit\u00e0 di trattenere l&#8217;acqua. In questo modo, non solo \u00e8 vulnerabile a un&#8217;ulteriore erosione, ma non pu\u00f2 nemmeno trasportare l&#8217;umidit\u00e0 e i nutrienti negli strati pi\u00f9 profondi del suolo.
